Environmental Program Costs
The Environmental Program Costs table illustrates the money spent by
Lilly for environmental programs. Capital represents money spent on
pollution control equipment and other physical assets related to
environmental protection. Expenses represent money spent on EHS
employee salaries, pollution control equipment operation and
maintenance, training and other noncapital costs. As of 1997, Lilly
maintains a worldwide staff of 330 environmental program employees.
In 1994, Lilly's capital expenses included the initiation of many new
programs. The start-up costs of these programs dramatically increased the
capital expenses, which have since decreased as projects have been
completed.
