Contractor Safety Performance

A matter of accountability

The campaign for improving our safety record began by identifying key problem areas. Construction safety proved to be a trouble spot. The accident rates clearly indicated a problem since our contractors were having mishaps at rates significantly worse than the national average.

An aggressive contractor safety program has resulted in dramatic improvement in the performance of contractors at Lilly work sites since 1991. Continued improvement was noted in 1994. The success of this program is due to the combined efforts of construction services, plant engineering and maintenance, area safety coordinators, engineering coordinators, independent contractors and contract employees.

By developing and implementing contractor safety policies and programs, Lilly has been able to strongly influence the on-site safety performance of its construction and plant engineering contractors. This has resulted in substantial and sustained reductions in the rates of lost-time accidents, lost workdays, OSHA recordables, and the number and cost of accident claims.

Lilly construction services-plant engineering and maintenance has received a number of external awards for program excellence. In 1992, the Lilly construction division was presented with a runner-up award by the Business Roundtable in Indianapolis, and in 1994 the group was awarded the Metro Indianapolis Coalition for Construction Safety Proactive Owner Award.
