While the safety of our employees and contractors is paramount to our company philosophy and operations, our safety record has been a good news-bad news situation.
Overall, for the U.S. in 1994, the Lilly accident rate increased for both OSHA recordables and lost-time injuries and illnesses. OSHA recordables are those cases that involve injury or illness resulting in lost time, medical treatment beyond first aid, restriction of work or motion, loss of consciousness, or fatality. There were, however, no fatalities at any Lilly sites. OSHA defines lost time as a work-related injury resulting in more than one lost work shift.
On a global level, both the recordable and lost-time injury and illness rates for 1994 remained essentially the same as 1993 rates. In particular, considerable improvement in safety performance was shown for Lilly sites in Canada; Basingstoke, Dista/Speke, and Erl Wood in England; Kinsale, Ireland; Mexico; and Spain.
In efforts to reduce the number of job-related accidents, several initiatives are being developed and implemented. These include:
